Marevna’s painting The French Court (1955) is an important
source of inspiration for this exhibition Under
the Cedar Tree. Marevna painted the
Great Court of Athelhampton in the contemporary style of her time. Here, in
this painting, Marevna’s use of cubist angles, delicate textures and diamond
forms are reinterpreted in a completely abstract manner, contemporary for our
viewpoint today. Marevna’s life story and perseverance as an artist in the face
of numerous challenges are described in her memoirs Life with the Painters of La Ruche. Her work, writing and relationship
with Athelhampton have provided much inspiration for the artworks featured in
this exhibition.
